Textiles has always been an important element of Deborah’s artistic expression and how she interprets the coastal landscape of Scotland.
Her fascination for the coastal landscape is rooted in her childhood holidays and memories of exploration. She’s always been intrigued with what lies round the next headland and the idea of continual change and renewal by the incoming tide.
I saw her work first at the RSA in Edinburgh in January 2024 and immediately asked her to be part of this show.

Artist Bio: Deborah Campbell
Deborah’s first introduction to Textiles as an artform came from studying Printed Textiles at Glasgow School of Art where she graduated in 1987 with a BA Hons Degree.
The inspiration for her work lies in the remote coastal locations around Scotland where she studies & records the landscape and birdlife that inhabit that environment. She creates intricate fine art textiles using a selection of hand printing methods onto fabric. She works onto organza and gauze to give her the option to layer fabrics and create depth of colour and pattern. She then collages and combines using free motion machine embroidery as her drawing tool.
